Motorboat for Beginners – Types

Motorboats are divided into three main types:

  1. Displacement
  2. Semi-displacement
  3. Planing

The first two types of motorboats are primarily suited for more leisurely trips. They are characterized by lower maximum speeds and easier maneuverability. If you're looking for a boat primarily for fishing (without the option for overnight stays), it's worth considering an open boat – without a cabin, providing easy access to all sides. These boats are typically more affordable and usually have an outboard engine, which is more than sufficient for fishing purposes. However, if you're looking for a boat for longer trips with family or friends, a cabin becomes essential. Cabin motorboats offer comfort – not only do they provide protection against unexpected weather changes, but they also allow you to stay on the water for extended periods with the option to sleep onboard.

The third type of motorboat is the planing boat. Its purpose is entirely different from the previous two. These boats usually have much more power and speed, easily reaching planing mode, and offer far more excitement than comfort. They are perfect for towing water skis and racing. Planing boats are also used by the police, water rescue services, and the maritime volunteer rescue service.

If you've already decided on the purpose of your first motorboat, it's time to consider the matter of licensing.

Motorboat for Beginners – Licensing

Operating a motorboat in Poland without a license is legal, but there are restrictions that lead many people to obtain certification. A motorboat without a license can have an engine with a maximum power of 10 kW (13.6 HP) or more, provided that its top speed is limited to 15 km/h. The motorboat license, which allows you to operate boats or jet skis with engines up to 200 HP, can be obtained in as little as one day. The exam costs 250 PLN, and the issuance of the license costs 50 PLN. The training itself usually lasts no more than 6 hours (both theory and practical), and prices vary. Companies offering such training and certification can be found through our search engine. To summarize, if 13.6 HP is sufficient for you, there is no need to obtain a license. However, if you want more options in boats and more power for your first motorboat, getting certified is the way to go.

Used Motorboat for Beginners – What to Look Out For?

Buying a used motorboat as your first one seems like a reasonable solution if you're on a limited budget. However, remember that with motorboats – just like with cars – it's easy to encounter an unscrupulous seller, whose sale might cause you problems.

  • Displacement
  • Semi-displacement
  • Planing

How long has the seller owned the boat, the reason for the sale, the total number of owners, the number of repairs made, the service location, and the current technical condition are essential questions to ask. When you’re inspecting the boat in person, take a close look at the hull and engine, spin the propeller “dry,” and check if it runs on a single axis. If it moves sideways, it means the engine isn’t fully functional and has had some unfortunate incidents. Any oil leaks, cracking noises, or lack of smooth operation should also catch your attention.

After checking these elements, inspect the steering system, and you can head out for your first test drive. While on the water, make sure that driving the motorboat is enjoyable for you. Continuously monitor the steering system, gears, and engine performance. If nothing raises any suspicions and you feel like this is the boat for you, move on to price negotiations and then proceed with the purchase!
